If you are like most folks in city environments you have or are currently experiencing rat infestation, mice and other vermin garbage and trash-related problems. Rats are a major concern in many populated city areas. Trash-filled bags are usually left on street corners or in open-top / unsecured garbage cans that allow all kinds of varmints and other animals access to your trash.
Our Varmint Vault rat-proof garbage can enclosures ensures that these animals will be kept at bay and seeks to dismantle habitats and food sources. That effort includes setting traps and installing rodent and rat-resistant trash can enclosures while working on legislation that would require restaurants to hose away sludge from dripping garbage as well as securing trash cans in a secure rat and mice-proof enclosure.
Effective solution for urban areas
Take for instance New York City, its complaint hotline is on pace for a record year of rat calls, exceeding more than 24,000 over each of the past two years. Blistering audits have faulted efforts to fight what one official called a "rat crisis." And even jaded New Yorkers were both disgusted and a little impressed by "Pizza Rat," the plucky rodent in a recent viral YouTube clip seen dragging a large cheese slice down a subway stairwell.
One of New York City's comptrollers has taken on the self-appointed role of rat czar for the rat infestation problem. He has said, "I've seen rats walking upright, saying, ?Good morning, Mr. Comptroller,?". "It's unsightly to see rats running through neighborhoods like they actually bought a coop somewhere."
New York officials who have been fighting the battle for decades but there have been no effective solutions.
Fleas that can carry a slew of potentially deadly diseases? including the bubonic plague, typhus, and spotted fever are living it up on the city's robust rodent population, according to a cringe-inducing new study. A study of 133 New York City rats found 6,500 fleas, lice and mites that can carry bacteria that can cause serious diseases in humans, the study by Cornell and Columbia Universities found.
Among the creepy critters found were Oriental rat fleas, which are notorious for their role in spreading the bubonic plague, said lead author and Cornell entomologist Matthew Frye. All it takes is a flea bite to pass on the infection: Fleas regurgitate rats infected blood and guts when they bite into human hosts, passing along disease, Frye said. And rat occupancy is through the roof.
